The history of Lake Lure begins with the Morse brothers. In 1902, Lucius Morse and his brothers purchased 400 acres near Chimney Rock for just $5,000. The brothers later acquired additional land in the area, to the sum total of approximately 8,000 acres. Following this acquisition, the brothers funded the construction of a dam on the Broad River, which subsequently produced the lake after which the town of Lake Lure is named.

In 1928, the dam’s power plant operations commenced with the sale of electricity under a 10-year contract to Blue Ridge Power Company. In 1929, development plans reached a halt with the onset of the Great Depression. Stroud & Company, a mortgage company, soon foreclosed on the lake and the dam. In 1965, state authorized revenue bonds were issued and permitted the town to buy the assets from Stroud. The town continues to sell electricity to Duke Energy, and also maintains a fixed water level year-round for those who own lakefront property in Lake Lure, North Carolina.
