The southern portion of Brunswick County contains the communities of Bolivia, Boiling Spring Lakes, Carolina Shores, St. James, Shallotte, and Supply. The county seat is located in Bolivia which is located in the middle of Brunswick County. Bolivia is also home of the Brunswick Botanical Garden. This one of a kind site serves as a setting to study various plants, grasses and trees. Visitors can enjoy a soothing walk among the gardens, waterfall and stream.

Boiling Spring Lakes is an area which includes over 50 lakes including Big Lake. Big Lake provides 10 miles of shoreline for fishing, swimming or canoeing. The town at one time was known as Bouncing Log Spring for a large piece of petrified wood bobbing in the waters rising from the spring. After this wood no longer existed, the name was changed to Boiling Spring Lakes. Today it is estimated that over 43 million gallons of pristine water flow from the spring.

St. James is a quiet community with close access to shopping and restaurants. It is the newest community in Brunswick County to be incorporated. There are 3 golf courses in St. James, The Founder’s Club, The Player’s Club and The Member’s Club which is a Hale Irwin signature course. Originally established as a retirement development, today this gated golf community is open to all ages.

Outside of the larger areas of Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, Shallotte is a great place to take advantage of unique shops or stroll through local art galleries. As one of the first areas settled in Brunswick County its location has made it the center of commerce especially for the Brunswick Islands. Further south near the state border is Carolina Shores. This growing community of retirees includes a golf course, new restaurants and shopping.

Supply, which was given its name from the many hardware stores and other supply businesses, is found on U.S. 17 at North Carolina Hwy. 211. Located in Supply is the luxurious development of Seascape at Holden Plantation. The distinct home sites and designs will take you back to the grandeur of southern living of the past. Whether you enjoy a leisurely walk or boating there are a host of private amenities to choose from. For those whose choice is golfing, several of the sport’s greatest names have courses nearby.
